Hydroseeding and erosion control

Over the past number of years serious flooding and water pollution events have highlighted the need to increase stabilisation of slopes and riverbanks. Activities such as construction can result in significant amounts of run-off which can cause soil loss and pollute waterways. Sowing wildflowers with innovative techniques such as hydroseeding can provide a natural solution to some of the problems of erosion control.

Riverside slope under development

At this riverside site in Omagh a burst water main destabilised the nearby slope. The normal stabilisation solution is to introduce gabions to the site – large wire cages filled with stones. However, following discussions with NI Water an alternative approach using hydroseeding was provided.

Using hydroseeding a specialised blend of wildflower and grass seeds, bonding agents, and stabilisation components was sprayed directly onto the site. This mix or ‘mulch’ provided a matrix which not only kept the seed in place on the slope but also provided an ideal environment for seed germination.

Hydroseeding can also be used to sow more conventional high-colour seed mixes on slopes and banks where standard sowing techniques can be difficult to use. For example, hydroseeding was used to sow a high colour seed mix on this roadside bank in Dungannon.
