Hi-Colour seed mixes

Our 'Hi-Colour' mixes provide the ideal combination of visually attractive wildflowers that also benefit biodiversity.

Aside from the benefits to wildlife, as less management is required than with typical bedding plant schemes, the mixes provide a more sustainable planting regime. Wildflowers are also more resilient to very wet or very dry conditions. For more information on the One Year and Four Year Hi-Colour mixes, see below.
One Year Hi-Colour mixes
The One Year Hi-Colour mixes contain annual species only, are reliable to grow, and provide a high density of colour over a long flowering season. These mixes are provided in two varieties:
  • Hi-Colour Standard
  • Hi-Colour Enhanced – includes cottage garden species that enhance biodiversity
The ‘Enhanced’ mix has been specifically designed with urban areas in mind to provide a cost-effective alternative to three-season bedding planting. It provides a long growing season of full colour ideally suited to amenity planting schemes in public places.

High colour wildflower meadows

Cornflower
Four Year Hi-Colour mixes
These mixes last for a minimum of four years and contain a mix of 70% wildflowers and 30% fine-leaved grasses. They provide a colourful, cost-effective solution for larger areas and can be used to create semi-permanent wildflower meadows.

The mixes were designed following research conducted in conjunction with Greenmount College (CAFRE). The composition of the mixes can be adapted to particular soil or site conditions.

The Four Year Hi-Colour mix is provided in two varieties:

  • Hi-Colour Standard
  • Hi-Colour Enhanced – includes cottage garden species that enhance biodiversity
The Four Year Hi-Colour 'Enhanced' mix is designed for urban areas and includes naturalised species that are attractive to wildlife. The 'Enhanced' mix has a longer flowering season compared to the standard mix.
Four Year mix flowering information:
  • Contains a mix of annuals, native biennials, perennials and appropriate fine-leaved meadow grasses; the Enhanced mix also contains cottage garden biennials and perennials attractive to insects
  • Flowering period – spring through autumn for a minimum of four years
  • Flowering effect – high colour impact throughout the planted area
  • Attractive to insects such as butterflies, enhancing biodiversity

Islands Park, Newcastle

The flowering sequence for the Four Year mix is as follows:

Year 1:
Year 2:
Years 3 and 4:
High colour annuals
Biennials and faster growing perennials such as Oxeye Daisy and Red Campion
Slower growing perennials such as Scabious species

Yellow Rattle

Introducing Yellow Rattle to a site that has been sown with a Four Year Hi-Colour mix will enable a semi-permanent wildflower meadow to establish. One of the problems with wildflower areas is that grasses tend to take over after a number of years. Yellow Rattle is a native plant that feeds off the roots of these grasses – reducing the amount of grass and increasing the populations of wildflowers. Yellow Rattle can be added to an existing area by over-sowing in the autumn. For more information see Yellow Rattle.
